As opposed to the artificially designed stretches of beach hotels on the Atlantic shore, this is a maze of wild salt-marshes, mangrove jungles and uninhabited palm islands. Public boat ramps are free and quite useful.
Hillsborough River
State Park:
Truly a paradise for hikers and nature lovers -
Hillsborough river East of Tampa. Don't forget to bring your camera when baby
alligators enjoy the sun. You may not expect river rapids here. Photos by John
D. Cowsar Jr. and Kurt Koller.
Homossassa Springs and Wildlife Park:
An underwater
observation tank offers exciting views. Tarpon and Manatees roam the springs.
European sailors may have sighted these harmless endangered creatures and their
narrations created the myth about mermaids.
Down the Gulf Coast
The farther South you go, the more crowded beaches will replace those hundreds of uninhabited islands teaming with wildlife. Myakka River State Park East of Sarasota is one scenic exemption to this rule.
But be aware, you won't find rolling hills, the shoreline will be a maze of buildings, higher population density, and more traffic on roads and on water.
Ft. Desoto State Park
Pristine beaches, wildlife, a
glimpse of war history and a great view on the Sunshine
Skyway Bridge. Pinellas County
even offers 360º virtual tours.
It's a small world after all...
